  • Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, George Evans, William J. Hough, Robert Dale Owen, Henry W. Hilliard, Alexander Dallas Bache,Richard Rush. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, Lewis Cass, Sidney Breese, Joseph G. Totten, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, and William C. Preston.
  • The secretary presented a letter from C.C. Jewett accepting the appointment as Assistant Secretary and Librarian. The chancellor presented a "resolution of the Legislature" of Ohio recommending James Russell to construct a planetarium for use by the Institution. Mr. Hough presented a letter from Ward B. Howard offering to furnish granite for the building. Mr. Seaton presented a letter from Henry Stockton offering to lithograph the plans and drawings for the building, a letter from Hon. J. Phillips Phoenix recommending P. Naylor to roof the building, and a letter from R.R. Gurley recommending the purchase of "Catlin's gallery of Indian paintings." The board then resolved that following the introduction of a bill to the U.S. Senate regarding the site of the institution's building, that if any changes were made to the site, all contracts authorized would still apply in the same manner and force, and that a copy of this resolution was to be forwarded to the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States by the Institution's secretary. The board then adjourned to meet the following Saturday at 10:00 AM.
