Summary

  • Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, George Evans, Lewis Cass, Sidney Breese, Robert Dale Owen, William J. Hough, Henry W. Hilliard, Alexander Dallas Bache, Rufus Choate. Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, Joseph G. Totten, Richard Rush, Gideon Hawley, and William C. Preston.
  • Mr. Choate presented a letter from Charles H. Hill recommending and offering marble from Massachusetts for the building and a letter from Isaiah Rogers explaining his architectural plans. Mr. Bache offered a resolution regarding the amount to be spent on the building, which was postponed for consideration. The board proceeded to consider the first of the resolutions appended to the report of the Building Committee, after which a series of resolutions regarding the same topic were introduced by the chancellor and Mr. Owen. After debate, consideration of the subject was postponed until the after the board recessed. The board recessed until 7:30 PM that evening and then resumed its session. Mr. Choate presented a letter from G.S. Bulfinch offering to sell the Smithsonian Institution the architectural library of the late Charles Bulfinch. The board then adjourned until the following day at 10:00 AM.
