Summary

  • Present: George M. Dallas, William W. Seaton, George Evans, Lewis Cass, Sidney Breese, Robert Dale Owen, William J. Hough, Henry W. Hilliard, Richard Rush, Alexander Dallas Bache, Rufus Choate. Also Present : Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, Joseph G. Totten, Gideon Hawley, and William C. Preston.
  • The chancellor presented a letter from John P. Todd offering on behalf of himself and Mrs. Madison "immense blocks of marble" from Virginia for the use of the Institution, a letter from Charles Fraber asking for the position of messenger, a letter from Reverdy Johnson as a memorial of R. Cary Long, an architect from Baltimore, asking that an invitation for architectural plans be published before a decision is made, a letter from Theodore Frelinghuysen recommending the appointment of R.R. Gurley as librarian, a letter from John Haviland explaining and giving a reduced cost estimate for the architectural plans he submitted to the board, and a letter from John McArran asking for the position of gardener. Mr. Bache informed the board that he had received a letter from C. F. Hagedorn, general consul of Bavaria, indicating that a large library belonging to Count Haptedton of Munich was for sale.
  • On behalf of the Committee on Organization, Mr. Owen noted that the the report made by himself on December 1st accompanied by various resolutions and recommitted to the committee on December 21st had not been agreed to by the board; he then reported back the report and accompanying resolutions in an amended form. Mr. Choate offered various resolutions in relation to the organization of the Institution which were read. The board then recessed until 1:00 PM when it met and proceeded to further consideration of the first resolution reported by the Building Committee on the 20th of January. After debate, it was ordered that the board adjourn to meet at2 9:30 AM the following morning.
