Also Present: Joseph Henry. The members not present were Roger B. Taney, Joseph G. Totten, Gideon Hawley, and William C. Preston.
  • Mr. Mills appeared before the board and explained his architectural plans for a building. The chancellor presented a letter from Thomas L. Smith, late register of the Treasury, requesting the position of treasurer and recorder of the Institution. Mr. Rush presented a letter from James Buchanan recommending Mr. Robert W. Burrows for employment by the Institution, after which Mr. Rush added his own recommendation of Mr. Burrows. The board proceeded to consideration of the first resolution introduced by the chancellor on January 20th on behalf of the Committee on Buildings regarding the selection of a plan for the Institution's building. Mr. Dallas, Mr. Cass, and Mr. Breese then read "propositions of amendment which they intend to offer at a proper time." After debate, the board adjourned until the following Monday at 10:00 AM.
