Summary

John Bernhard Smith (1858-1912), entomologist, Division of Insects, United States National Museum, was Assistant Curator, 1886-1889. The Division of Insects of the United States National Museum (USNM) had its origins in the deposit of personal collections in 1881 by Charles V. Riley, entomologist of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Smith left the Smithsonian in 1889 and went to Rutgers University, New Jersey, to become Professor of Entomology, Entomologist in the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and in 1894, State Entomologist of New Jersey.
