PrintAn Act making Appropriations for the Civil and Diplomatic Expenses of Government for the Year ending the thirtieth Day of June, one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine, and for other purposes. In addition to the general federal appropriation, this act funded improvements and fencing to the grounds from the President's House to the Capitol and supported research on the collections from the United States Exploring Expedition.

Although this statute does not appropriate money directly to the Smithsonian Institution, part of the funding for grounds work from the President's House to the Capitol was used for the Smithsonian's grounds, and the allotment for publication of the works of the exploring expedition funded Smithsonian curators.
