Hugh Percy (1742-1817), also known as Hugh Lord Warkworth, later known as the Earl of Percy and the Second Duke of Northumberland, was the eldest son of Hugh Smithson, First Duke of Northumberland, and Elizabeth Percy, First Duchess of Northumberland. Hugh Percy succeeded his father as Duke of Northumberland in 1786. He served as a general in the British army. He married on July 2, 1765, Anne, daughter of John third Earl of Bute. The marriage was dissolved in 1779. He married Frances Julia, third daughter of Peter Burrell, of Beckenham, Kent, and sister of Peter, first Lord Gwydyr. Percy served in the British army in North America during the American Revolution. Hugh Percy was half-brother of James Smithson, founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution.
