  • Biography: Xavier Becerra was born in Sacramento, California. He received a B.A. from Stanford University in 1980 and the J.D. from Stanford University School of Law in 1984. He practiced law in a private practice; served on staff of California State Senator Art Torres in 1986; was Deputy Attorney General, California Office of the Attorney General from 1987 to 1990; served as a member of the California State assembly from 1990 to 1992. Becerra, a Democrat, was first elected to the House in 1993. He is the first Latino to serve on the House Committee on Ways and Means, where he is a member of its Health; Social Security; and Oversight subcommittees. He is also a member of the House Budget Committee. A member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), Becerra currently serves as the chairman of the CHC's Telecommunications and Technology Task Force. He also is a member of the Congressional Arts Caucus and secretary of the Democratic Study Group Executive Committee. At the international level, he serves as vice chairman of the U.S.-Korea Interparliamentary Exchange. In 2017, he became the Attorney General of the State of California.
