The U.S. Las Cruces, a 64-foot launch, shown here in its former life carrying as many as 200 passengers who wined and dined as they cruised the Panama Canal, was donated to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for use as a floating laboratory for scientists stationed at the headquarters as well as for visiting scientists.
