Summary

A circular is issued to correspondents, requesting them to furnish a detailed account of their methods of indexing and filing letters and other papers with the view toward developing a convenient and practical system at the Smithsonian Institution. After 1882, the Division of Correspondence and Documents will maintain most of the museum's administrative files. Later in the year, a circular will be prepared to be sent out to 200 librarians, soliciting their cooperation in the creation of a bibliographic catalog of scientific periodicals.
