Summary

Portrait of Sylvester Rosa Koehler (1837-1900), curator of graphic arts at the United States National Museum at the Smithsonian Institution from 1886 to 1900. Koehler built the graphic arts collection at the National Museum, focusing on the history of the technical processes of graphic arts, rather than the engravings as art works. He collected American, as well as European, works, and participated in the many expositions held in the second half of the nineteenth century.
