- Committees/Roles: Rush played a significant role in the founding of the Institution. In 1836, he was sent to England to represent the United States in the Chancery Court lawsuit to secure the James Smithson bequest for the United States, and was awarded the bequest in 1838. He remained active in the affairs of the new Institution until his death. Permanent Committees: Elected to the Committee on Libraries on 09/08/1846. Ad Hoc Committees: Elected to the committee to work with the secretary in preparing a list of books to be purchased on 12/04/1846. He was nominated as an honorary member on 12/17/1847.
