Summary

The Center for Astrophysics (CfA) is formed as a joint venture between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Harvard College Observatory. The center is devoted to research into the basic processes that determine the nature and evolution of the universe. George B. Field, Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University, is named director.
