J. F. Gates (John Frederick Gates) Clarke, a team member on the Smithsonian-Bredin Caribbean Expedition, with an unidentified Dominican native, appears to be picking up palm fronds. The native is toting collected fronds on his head. Clarke stayed on the island by himself for a time. J. F. Gates (John Frederick Gates) Clarke, 1905-1990, was curator of Lepidoptera at the National Museum of National History.
