  • Secretary Charles Greeley Abbot established the Division of Radiation and Organisms. Its function was to investigate the effects of radiation upon living organisms, mainly plants, and the division was placed administratively under the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.
  • The Division of Radiation and Organisms was located in the basement of the Smithsonian Institution Building and dedicated to studying the effects of sunlight on plants.
