Summary

A new program is launched in which six recently appointed midshipmen from the Navy Department are assigned to the Smithsonian Institution or United States National Museum to learn techniques of natural history research for future cruises. Cadets are assigned to curators of ichthyology, marine invertebrates, ethnology, paleontology, geology, and mineralogy. Another part of the program involves training in the taxidermy of mammals and birds. In 1884, the fourth year of the program, no new personnel details will be made.
