A baby calf resting on the lawn of the South Yard behind the Smithsonian Institution Building or "Castle," as part of the Department of Living Animals around 1887. Live animals were kept in the South Yard for exhibit and study by the taxidermists before the National Zoological Park was founded in 1889.
