Spencer Fullerton Baird (1823-1887), ornithologist, was the first director of the United States National Museum and second Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1878-1887). He was a strong advocate for making the United States National Museum a part of the Smithsonian. In this image, Baird is seated in a chair, with his hand folded, looking slight to his right.
