The new bell was installed in the Flag Tower on August 10, 1996 on the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Smithsonian Institution. The bell is 34" in diameter, 28" high and weighs 821 pounds. It is composed of solid bronze and was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, London, England on September 21, 1995.
