Illustration (Fig. 51) in "A Handbook to the National Museum under the direction of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington" of a beaver, belonging to the order called "Rodentia," and marked by the great prominence of the incisors, or gnawing front teeth. The Rodentia constitute by far the largest order of mammals.
