Summary

Carl Mitman (1889-1958) opening a farewell gift surrounded by his staff on the occasion of his retirement. Mitman is pulling a dog-shaped cut out with a very long note attached to it from inside a miniature dog house labeled "MIT" and a fire hydrant next to it labeled "The Budget." The note reads "Forty-one years is a heluva time to serve an institution, but at last you have reached the end." Mitman joined the United States National Museum (USNM) in 1914. Mitman held a succession of curatorial positions at the USNM, culminating with his selection as head curator of the Department of Arts and Industries in 1932. He was chairman of the Smithsonian War Committee from 1942 to 1944. In 1948, Mitman was appointed Assistant to the Secretary for the National Air Museum where he remained until his retirement.
