Summary

Portrait of George Colton Maynard was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1839. He moved to Washington, D.C. during the early years of the Civil War he worked as a military telegraph operator and after the war, he worked for several years with the U.S. Signal Corps. Maynard came to the United States National Museum in 1885 and worked as an aid and custodian for the Division of Technology (Mechanical Phases) in the Department of Anthropology. He was appointed Assistant Curator in 1901-1912, and Curator of Mechanical Technology until his death in 1918.
