Summary

The 80-foot Linden tree, situated in the northeast corner of the 4.2 acre garden behind the Smithsonian Institution Building, was estimated to be more than 100 years old. The tree was planted by Smithsonian staff members in the late 1800's. The seven-foot bronze statue of Spencer Fullerton Baird by Leonard Baskin was unveiled in May of 1978 to commemorate the Centennial of Baird's appointment as the second Secretary (1878-1887) of the Smithsonian Institution.
