Crowds flock to the Arts & Industries Building (A&I) in the early 1950s after the Exhibits Modernization Program gave the history displays a new look. The "Syrian Sarcophagus" was brought into the country by a U.S. commodore who intended to give it to Andrew Jackson to be buried in. Jackson graciously refused the offer and the sarcophagus was eventually turned over to the Smithsonian and in May 1883 placed in front of the United States National Museum. Note the two-way traffic on the street in front of the building.
