Summary

Scaffolding erected so workmen could scale the heights to repair plaster on National Museum of Natural History's (NMNH) rotunda dome. During renovation, visitors could still see the African bush elephant from the edges of the blocked-off rotunda floor or from a balcony above. For protection, the popular pachyderm was temporarily housed in an enclosure swathed in plastic.
