Summary

Major John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) seated at his desk in his office in the Adams Building on F Street in Washington, D.C. Geologist and western explorer, Powell led an expedition to the Grand Canyon in the 1870's. He was first director of the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian from its founding in 1879 until his death in 1902.
