Summary

Major John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) seated, side view from his left, middle-aged but no date. Geologist and western explorer, Powell led an expedition to the Grand Canyon in the 1870's. He was first director of the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian from its founding in 1879 until his death in 1902.
