Summary

Prior to becoming the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Joseph Henry (1797-1878) taught natural philosophy at the Albany Academy (the equivalent of high school) and the College of New Jersey (Princeton University). He was the first Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1846 to 1878.
