This accession consists of records created and maintained by Robert A. (Robert Armstrong) Rice, research geographer and ecologist at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC), 1995-2019. SMBC forms part of the National Zoological Park and Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Prior to his official employment, Rice performed research in collaboration with and on contract for SMBC. The majority of the records document Rice's research on shade grown coffee, the First Sustainable Coffee Congress, and the establishment, administration, and marketing of the Smithsonian Institution's Bird Friendly Coffee certification program. Materials include correspondence; research data, reports, and papers; inspector training documents; certification applications, certificates, and agreements; promotional materials and ephemera; grant proposals; presentations and posters; oral histories and interviews with members of the sustainable coffee industry; conference proceedings; photographs; brochures; illustrations; artifacts; and related materials. Materials also include audio recordings from a sustainable cacao workshop. Some materials are in digital format.
