Finding Aids to Official Records of the Smithsonian Institution Archives
Accession 23-044
Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute
Website Records, 2009-2020
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of one website and one blog maintained by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's (STRI) Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO). ForestGEO is a multi-institutional program that builds on and expands STRI's global network of forest plots, transforming it into a platform for a broader range of scientific investigations.
The ForestGEO website was crawled on March 8, 2020, and again on March 19, 2020. It includes information about the forest plots, research programs, and data protocols. It also includes a blog that was launched in March 2014. The data itself is not included in this accession. Due to technical issues, some aspects of the website do not function as expected.
The "Center for Tropical Forest Science News" blog was crawled on March 19, 2020. The Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) had been the name of the STRI unit that administered the ForestGEO program. The names were routinely used together in the mid-2010s before ForestGEO became the term for both in approximately 2016 or 2017. This blog, which was maintained separately from the website, was active from October 2009 through February 2018, but continued to exist online. While the "Center for Tropical Forest News" blog and the blog on the ForestGEO website both focused on news about the program, the content on each was largely unique with only a few duplicate posts.
Materials are in digital format.
