This accession consists of records that document the work of curator E. Carmen Ramos creating and organizing symposia and conferences at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The symposium documented was "Encuentros: Artistic Exchange Between the U.S. and Latin America," which was an international symposium focused on the participation, confluence, synergy, and integration of artists from Latin American and the United States from the late 19th century to the present. It was held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum from October 5-6, 2011. Featured speakers included: Aida M. Alvarez, Dorota Biczel, Luis Camnitzer, Deborah Cullen, Karen Mary Davalos, Kirsten Einfedt, Ana M. Franco, Valerie Fraser, María C. Gaztambide, Elizabeth Glassman, Amelia Goerlitz, Michele Greet, Katherine Manthorne, Alison McClean-Cameron, Abigail McEwen, Max Mishler, Sarah J. Montross, Chon Noriega, Mary Kate O'Hare, E. The other conference documented was, "Latino Art Now!: Nuestra América: Expanding Perspectives in American Art," fourth biennial conference, November 7-9, 2013, in Washington, D.C. The conference was held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian. It took place in conjunction with the exhibit, "Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art." The conference explored the links between Latino art and artists and their U.S. artistic context. Presenters included Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, Francisco Aragón, Dolores Rivas Bahti, Rosa M. Cabrera, Carlos Callejo, Luis R. Cancel, Taina Beatriz Caragol-Barreto, Constance Cortez, Abigail Lapin Dardashti, Karen Mary Davalos, Ella Maria Diaz, V. Gina Díaz, Armando Durón, Pedro Hernández, María del Mar González-González, Judith L. Huacuja, Maris Lerer, Johana Londoño, Abigail McEwen, Orquidea Morales, Renee M. Moreno, Tey Marianna Nunn, Yasmin Ramirez, Harriett Romo, Ricardo Romo, Terecita Romo, Josie S. Talamantez, George Vargas, Jose Vidal, Tino Villanueva, and Tomás Ybarra-Frausto.
