- The Office of the Under Secretary for Museums and Culture was created in 2019. The Under Secretary oversees the Smithsonian's history and art museums, its cultural centers, the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Exhibits, and the National Collections Program. The museums that the Under Secretary oversees are the Anacostia Community Museum; the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and Freer Gallery of Art; the Arts and Industries Building; Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; the National Air and Space Museum; the National Museum of African American History and Culture; the National Museum of African Art; the National Museum of American History; the National Museum of the American Indian and the George Gustav Heye Center; the National Portrait Gallery; the National Postal Museum; and the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Remwick Gallery. Kevin Gover was appointed as Acting Under Secretary for Museums and Culture in 2019 and then in 2021 was appointed Under Secretary. Prior to his appointment Gover was the director of the National Museum of the American Indian from 2007-2021.
