This accession consists of the email account of Gwendolyn DuBois Shaw, Senior Historian, Director of Research, Publications, and Scholarly Programs at the National Portrait Gallery from 2019 to 2020. Shaw also served as Acting Chief Curator from July 2020-December 2020. Shaw received her B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara and her Ph.D. in American art from Stanford University. In her position, Shaw worked with the History, Curatorial, and Audience Engagement departments to strengthen the museum's scholarly programs and be a thought leader on the connections between portraiture, biography and identity in the United States. Shaw's email account consists of approximately 16,658 messages and covers the time period of July 2019 to December 2020. The correspondence documents Shaw's work with departments on public programs that brought together scholars, staff, and collections to dialogue on the interweaving of portraiture and identity in the United States.
