Summary

This accession consists of the email account of Amy Bartow-Melia, Associate Director for Audience Engagement, Office of Audience Engagement, 2016-2020. As Associate Director Bartow-Melia oversaw all aspects of the museum's outreach to its visitors, both in person and online. Her responsibilities included educational outreach; digital learning; visitor services; daily programs and interactive program spaces; exhibition interpretive planning; audience development through social media, blogs, and e-newsletters; and national program initiatives in civic engagement, music, theater, the Smithsonian Food History Program and the Lemelson Center for the Study Invention and Innovation. Bartow-Melia began her career at the National Museum of American History in 1997 when she was Assistant Director for Education and Public Programs. In 2004 she moved on to be the Director of Education for the Office of Public Programs and Outreach, then in 2007 became Deputy Associate Director for Public Programs. Following that from 2009-2013 she was Director of the Department of Public Programming within the Office of Education and Public Programs, and then from 2013-2016 she was Associate Director for Programs and Strategic Initiatives, Office of Programs and Strategic Initiatives. Bartow-Melia's email account consists of approximately 170,624 messages that date from September 2001 to September 2020. The correspondence documents Bartow-Melia's work providing a comprehensive visitor experience for all of the museum's audiences, including its daily visitors, program attendees, and those interacting with the museum through its website and social media.
