  • The Inspector General Act of 1978, as amended in 1988, created the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) as an independent entity within the Smithsonian Institution to detect and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse; to promote economy and efficiency; and to keep the head of the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Congress fully and currently informed of problems at the Smithsonian. The Inspector General reports directly to the Smithsonian Board of Regents and to Congress. The OIG conducts audits and investigations relating to the Smithsonian's programs and operations; reviews and makes recommendations regarding existing and programs programs and operations; and reports to the Department of Justice when it believes there has been a violation of criminal law.
