The hashtag was created by the Smithsonian Institution Archives to celebrate the 173rd anniversary of the founding of the Smithsonian Institution on August 9, 2019. It continued to be used by the Archives as well as other units across the Smithsonian to promote events, people, and milestones in the Smithsonian's history.
