Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of web-based content related to the first image ever taken of a black hole. The image was captured in April 2017 during observations made by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in coordination with the Event Horizon Telescope and was publicly announced in April 2019. The Chandra X-ray Observatory is operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory for the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
A press release, issued on April 10, 2019, by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), was crawled on April 11, 2019. The CfA is a joint venture between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Harvard College Observatory. A blog post, issued on April 8, 2019, by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, was also crawled on April 11, 2019. In addition, the search results of Twitter posts containing the hashtag "#EHTBlackHoleQ" were captured on July 1, 2019. Twitter is a microblogging platform and the hashtag was used for posts related to a question and answer session on April 10, 2019.
