  • Canal builder and engineer; pioneer Wisconsin scientist; made some of first and best maps of Wisconsin; U.S. Weather Bureau established at his insistence
  • Printed on verso: Wisconsin Meteoric Iron. / Discovered in 1868, thirty miles northwest from Milwaukee, Wis., and preserved in the cabinet of I.A. Lapham, of that city. It is 14 inches long, 8 inches wide, 4 inches thick, weighs 62 pounds, and is supposed to be part of a body of metallic and stony matter, which, while revolving like a comet, in an orbit about the sun, encountered our atmosphere and fell to the ground, exploding just before it reached the surface. / H.
