PrintDeed of Partition between Mrs. Elizabeth Hungerford Keate Macie and Mrs. Henrietta Maria Walker of the Estate of Lumley Hungerford Keate, their late Brother in the County of Wilts, July 28, 1787. The Deed of Partition is a manuscript on parchment and is 16 pages in length. Each sheet is approximately 23 x 27 inches unfolded. It is ribbon-bound at the lower edge, with revenue stamps affixed to the margin of each sheet, and a wax seal in the lower margin of the first sheet. Mrs. Elizabeth Macie was the mother of James Smithson, whose gift to the United States, lead to the founding of the Smithsonian Institution. The proceeds from the sale of the estate served as the seed with which Smithson would eventually amass his fortune. The Deed of Partition also includes Smithson's signature as a witness and was signed under his original name, James Lewis Macie.
