This accession consists of records created and maintained by Richard Kurin during his tenures as Acting Director for National Programs, 2004-2007; Acting Under Secretary for History and Culture, 2007-2008; Acting Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture, 2008-2009; Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture, 2009-2015; Acting Under Secretary for Museums, Education, and Research/Provost, 2015-2017; and Smithsonian Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador-at-Large within the Office of the Secretary, 2017- . Records in this accession document the development and administration of Smithsonian Institution museums, programs, and budget. Materials include reports, planning documents, correspondence, memoranda, statistics, budget documents, meeting materials, and related materials. Some materials were created by Kurin's predecessors in similar positions or by Kurin during his tenure as Director of the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, 1990-2007.
