Left to right: Kohei Fukuda, Japanese postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh; Andrew Tometsko, graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh; and research team leader Dr. Panayotis G. Katsoyannis, Associate Professor of Biochemistry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Fukuda was later in the Department of Applied Chemistry and Biochemical Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu, Japan. Tometsko and Katsoyannis were later at the Division of Biochemistry, Medical Research Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, New York. The University of Pittsburgh team was one of the first groups to synthesize insulin.
