Dr. Earl Steinford Johnston (1889-1947), plant physiologist and head of the Division of Radiation and Organisms, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, with one of the copper cages within which plants grew in a synthetic atmosphere, under electric light with glowing gas-tubes to add extra doses of certain special colors.
