Caption from Torch: "Museum of Natural History Director Porter Kier (right) and Curator of Minerals Paul Desautels admire a 75-carat emerald which was presented to the Smithsonian by Mrs. Stewart Hooker [Janet Annenberg Hooker] of New York. Hooker is the sister of Walter Annenberg, former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. The emerald, which was purchased by her from a New York jeweler 15 years ago, is believed to have once adorned the belt buckle of Abdul Hamid II (1876- 1909), one of the last sultans of the Ottoman Empire."
