Caption from Torch: "Jonathan King, Assistant Keeper of North American Collections in the British Museum, and staff members from the Smithsonian's National Museum of History and Technology open the crate housing a rare African-style drum made in America by an unknown slave in the colonial period. This extremely rare piece is an Akan type drum made of American cedar and deerskin. It was collected in Virginia about 1740 for Sir Hans Sloane, the founder of the British Museum. Since then it has been part of the British Museum's collections, and only now is it being lent to the History and Technology Museum as a contribution to its major Bicentennial exhibition "A Nation of Nations." The drum was flown in especially for inclusion in the exhibition. It has been exhibited in Britain almost continuously for 200 years."
