This accession consists of a dissertation written by museum specialist Ellen Roney Hughes, titled "Machines for Better Bodies: A Cultural History of Exercise Machines in America, 1830-1950," which was submitted to the graduate faculty at the University of Maryland in fulfillment of the requirement for a doctorate degree in American Studies in 2001; and the records of museum specialist David H. Shayt, documenting collection management issues in regard to the Mayo J. Kaan donation of his Superman photograph collection to the National Museum of American History. Materials include a publication, correspondence, photographs and slides, press clippings, and a deed of gift.
