Summary

Kennerly, Caleb Burwell Rowan (1829-1861) was born in Clarke County, Virginia, and died at sea between San Francisco and Acapulco, Mexico. He was a student of Spencer Fullerton Baird at Dickinson College. He received his B.A. from Dickinson; and his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He was Assistant Surgeon, U.S. Army; Surgeon-naturalist with the Northwestern Boundary Survey, Pacific Railroad Surveys, and Mexican Boundary Survey; and collected bird specimens for Baird and the Smithsonian. The caption reads, "Dr. Kennerly cocks his beaver at the Cascade Mountains."
