This accession consists of materials created by the Smithsonian Institution's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, under the direction of Richard Kurin, director, 1990-2009, during the development and planning of the "America's Millennium" program held to mark not only the new year, but the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the new millennium. The Smithsonian Institution, through the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the National Park Foundation, and the United States National Park Service, were directed to plan and execute projects and events for the program in conjunction with the White House Office. The White House Millennium Council, established by President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton through Executive Order 13072, created the America's Millennium program to celebrate America's historical and cultural legacy and stimulate fresh thinking about the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Materials include correspondence and memoranda; press releases; clippings; maps; an event program; and other related materials.
