Summary

William Jay Hale (1876-1955), Director of Organic Chemistry Research, Dow Chemical Company, 1919-1934, and Professor of Chemurgy, Connecticut College, 1936-1939. This photograph was distributed in connection with publication of his book "Farmer Victorious: Money, Mart, And Mother Earth" (1949). Hale is credited with coining the term "chemurgy" to apply to human-initiated chemistry or, in his words, the "direction of nature's life agencies to the production of chemicals for industry."
