Summary

The three men are standing at the front of Byrd's church, Dayton Methodist Episcopal Church (North). Rappleyea (left), who had only recently joined Byrd's congregation, had persuaded the minister to invite Potter to give a sermon. Rappleyea argued that because William Jennings Bryan was scheduled to preach that same Sunday at Dayton Methodist Episcopal Church (South), it would be only "fair" if a liberal minister such as Potter spoke at Byrd's church.
