Summary

U.S. Navy Captain Charles Vernon Gridley (1844-1898), on board the U.S.S. Olympia, 1898. In March 1897, Gridley was promoted to captain and took command of the Olympia, which was the flagship for Admiral George Dewey. Gridley participated in the Battle of Manila Bay but died on the return voyage to the United States.
